Literary residencies I write in Gdansk

The residency programme offers those who create, translate and research literature the opportunity to spend between 2 and 6 weeks in Gdansk. During this stay, male and female residents work creatively and get to know the local literary and artistic community. Participants are provided with a flat, substantial and logistical support and a monthly honorarium.

How do we operate?

Every spring, we open the call for applications for the Gdansk literary residency programme. It is open to authors from Poland, Belarus and Ukraine, as well as translators and interpreters of literature into Polish and literary researchers. Residents are provided with a flat in downtown Gdańsk, substantive and logistical support and an honorarium, the amount of which is announced separately for each edition. They are also involved in the literary activities of the Institute of Urban Culture.

A committee comprising representatives of the Institute of Urban Culture, the Literary Union Association and the Association of Literary Translators selects the residents from among the submitted applications.

The programme is being implemented in three calls:
- residencies for authors of prose or poetry from Poland, Belarus and Ukraine;
- a residence for female translators and interpreters translating literature into Polish;
- humanist residence for researchers into the life and work of Professor Maria Janion (with particular emphasis on her Gdansk period).

Participants in the Gdansk residency programme so far include: Aleksandra Zbroja, Aneta Kaminska, Katarzyna Roman-Rawska, Juliusz Pielichowski, Piotr Sobolczyk, Ivan Bajdak, Julia Artemova or Agata Romaniuk.

Deadline

The call for applications for residencies is announced in the spring of each year (March/April). Residencies run from the end of May/June until the end of December. IKM has launched the programme in 2021

Organisers

The residency programme is organised by the Institute of Urban Culture and funded by the City of Gdańsk. The programme is implemented in cooperation with the Krakow Festival Office and the Old Town Cultural Centre, as well as the Literary Union and the Association of Literary Translators.
