Metropolitanka

Metropolitanka is a herstorical social and research project dedicated to the role of women in the history of Gdansk, the metropolis and Pomerania. It has been in operation since 2012 and consists of several intertwining initiatives. The most important of these include the Pomeranian Women Database, which collects information about women who were important to the region, a series of interviews with employees of the former Gdańsk Shipyard entitled „The Shipyard is a Woman” and walks through the post-shipyard areas in the footsteps of women.

How do we operate?

During the summer season, together with the Metropolitanka guides, we invite you to the shipyard areas and the Old and Main Town for walks in the footsteps of women who played an important role for the region. During a guided tour of the former Gdańsk Shipyard, you can find out what impact this legendary place had on the lives of its female workers, listen to stories about rebellious crane workers, Solidarity activists and the everyday life of people during the August 1980 strike.

Herstories of women who have made an impact on the life of Pomerania can be found in the Pomeranian Women Database (click). The pioneering work of the women described influenced various fields and areas of life: art, culture, science, social life.

Deadline

The Metropolitan's walks in the footsteps of women are organised during the summer season. The schedule of guided tours is updated every year. The project has been running since 2012.

Rules of participation

The walks are ticketed and seating is limited. Free Metropolitanka materials (book, radio play, guides) are available on the project website.
